Grasses and forage legumes utilizes the sunlight energy for active photosynthesis throughout the season and are therefore among the most productive agricultural crops in temperate regions where rain is abundant. At the same time such perennial crops have a very low environmental impact In terms of nutrient leaching and pesticide needs and increase the soil carbon stock.
These are all traits needed for a future agriculture that will have to supply bioresources for a growing bioeconomy, decrease the environmental impact and decrease the total agricultural CO2 emission.
Green biorefining technologies offers several solutions for how to utilize perennial green crops and produce a spectrum of valuable products needed in the future bioeconomy, including locally sourced food and feed, biomaterials, bioenergy, and biological fertilizers.
This talk will show how new green biorefineries recently have emerged in Denmark, what the status is now and how new technologies can be integrated to produce new products and increase the value of grasses, forage legumes and potentially many other green leafy crops.
